Gippsland Championships 2019
Latrobe Valley Baseball Association once again put on the Gippsland Championships prior to their 2019 season. The Sale Baseball Club hosted the event over the weekend April 6 & 7 at their home ground at Stephenson Park.
Gippsland Championships saw local teams – Morwell Cougars, Moe/Newborough Dodgers, Churchill Braves, Traralgon Redsox and Sale Rangers. Also attending the competition were visiting teams – Pakenham Pumas and reigning premiers, Dingley Baseball Club.
Each team played each other once across both days until Moe/ Newborough just pipped Traralgon to finish in second. Moe/ Newborough went through to the Grand Final to battle the undefeated Dingley and after a back-and-forth battle, Dingley bats lit up in the fifth and sixth to take control. Dingley went back-to-back and won the 2019 Gippsland Championships over Moe/Newborough 4-9.
The Dodgers started to take an early lead in the 2nd inning. After Moe/Newborough’s Jason Smith hit a solo home run, scores were 3-2.
A hit from Dingley’s Will Tucker led to Dingley being in the lead by 1 run. Moe/ Newborough came back to tie the game from Ash Poxon, with a double on a 1-2 count in the 3rd inning 4-4.
Dingley did the remaining damage to Moe/Newborough in the 4th inning scoring 1 run & 6th inning scoring 4 runs. Where Dingley’s Jack Wills hitting a solo home run in the 4th.
2019 Most Valuable Player from across the weekend was Dingley’s Jack Wills with 9 votes. Traralgon’s Max Smith came in a close second with 8 votes. Dingley Baseball Club accepted the Shield, as well as the flag and thanked all the clubs for playing a competitive weekend of baseball.
